From night drops over Southern Italy to mountain assaults along the Winter Line, the paratroopers of the 82nd Airborne Division played a crucial role in the Italian Campaign.
This private multi-day battlefield journey retraces the operations of the 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment and the 509th Parachute Infantry Battalion from Salerno to the Bernhardt Line, and onward to Anzio.

The 82nd Airborne in the Italian Campaign
Salerno & Avellino – September 1943
In the critical days following Operation Avalanche, the 509th Parachute Infantry jumped near Avellino to disrupt German movements and prevent reinforcements from reaching the Salerno beachhead.
Meanwhile, the 504th reinforced the Salerno perimeter, helping stabilise the fragile Allied foothold.
The Volturno Line – October 13–14, 1943
In mid-October, elements of the 504th crossed the flooded Volturno River under artillery and machine-gun fire. The assault marked the beginning of the push toward the German Winter Line.
Venafro & Rocchetta – October–November 1943
In the mountainous terrain above Venafro, the 509th operated against German rearguard forces holding key ridgelines and observation points.
Rocchetta Ridge and surrounding heights became contested ground, where paratroopers fought as mountain infantry under harsh weather conditions.
Monte Rotondo & the Mignano Gap – November–December 1943
As part of operations against the Bernhardt Line, the 504th supported Allied assaults through the Mignano Gap sector.
The terrain here—steep slopes, exposed ridges, narrow passes— demonstrates the complexity of airborne units operating in conventional infantry roles.
