From Maiori to Anzio – Following America’s First Rangers in Italy
They were young. Highly trained. Intensely motivated. And in Italy, they were often sent where the fighting was hardest.
This multi-day private battlefield journey retraces the path of Darby’s Rangers — from their daring landing at Maiori on the Amalfi Coast to the tragic encirclement at Cisterna during the Anzio campaign.
It is a story of audacity, sacrifice, and identity — the story of America’s first elite Ranger force in the European theater.
Who Were Darby’s Rangers?
Officially designated the 1st Ranger Battalion, and later expanded to include the 3rd and 4th Ranger Battalions, Darby’s Rangers were formed in 1942 under Lieutenant Colonel William O. Darby.
Modeled after the British Commandos and trained in Scotland under extreme conditions, these soldiers specialized in rapid, high-risk assaults behind enemy lines.
After proving themselves in North Africa and Sicily, they were deployed in Italy — where mountain warfare, narrow passes, and fortified towns would test them relentlessly.
The Rangers’ Campaign in Italy
Maiori & Chiunzi Pass – Operation Avalanche (September 1943)
Darby’s Rangers secured the coastal sector north of Salerno, protecting the Allied flank during the opening phase of the Italian Campaign.
As part of the Salerno landings, the 1st and 4th Ranger Battalions executed a daring night landing at Maiori on the Amalfi Coast.
Their objective was clear: seize the Chiunzi Pass, the mountain corridor controlling access from the coast toward Naples.
Securing this pass prevented German forces from counterattacking the Allied beachhead from the high ground. The Rangers succeeded — and helped secure the Allied advance north.
San Pietro Infine & Monte Sammucro (December 1943)
In December 1943, the Rangers faced one of their toughest battles in the mountains around San Pietro Infine.
They climbed steep slopes under direct enemy fire to seize key positions, including Hill 950 and Hill 1205 on the Monte Sammucro massif.
Today, the ruins of San Pietro still stand — the only village in the area not rebuilt on its original site. Walking there is like stepping into December 1943.
The terrain explains everything. Steep, exposed, unforgiving. Standing on those heights reveals the scale of what was asked of them.
Anzio & The Battle of Cisterna (January 30, 1944)
From here the Ranger battalions planned reconnaissance and assault missions during the early phases of the Anzio campaign in the Italian Campaign.
The memorial marks the sector where the 1st and 3rd Ranger Battalions were encircled during the fighting south of Cisterna on the Anzio beachhead.
In January 1944, the Rangers were assigned a critical mission during the Anzio offensive: infiltrate behind German lines near Cisterna before dawn.
Instead, they encountered heavily concentrated German forces. Surrounded and outnumbered, the Rangers fought until ammunition was exhausted.
The losses were devastating. Only a handful escaped capture.
The destruction of the Ranger battalions at Cisterna marked one of the most tragic moments in Ranger history — and remains central to their legacy.
Testimony – The Dollar Under the Bridge
According to the daughter of Ranger Arnold Davis — one of the very few who survived — the survivors gathered under a bridge after the battle and signed their names on a single dollar bill.
It was a small act of remembrance. A fragile moment of humanity after devastation.
This story is often shared on-site, where the landscape still carries the silence of that morning.
