The Battle of Monte Cassino was one of the most brutal confrontations of World War II, and the soldiers of the New Zealand Division, including the legendary Maori Battalion, were at the heart of the fight. Between February and May 1944, these troops faced relentless German resistance in an attempt to break through the heavily fortified Gustav Line and capture Cassino.

The battle was not just about strategy; it was a test of endurance and courage. Among the many stories of heroism, one stands out - that of Second Lieutenant Ngarimu of the Maori Battalion, who led a daring assault on a German position. Refusing to retreat despite heavy fire, he continued fighting until his last breath, inspiring those around him. His bravery earned him a posthumous Victoria Cross, the highest military honor.

For many New Zealand families, Cassino is more than just a historic battlefield - it is a sacred place where their ancestors fought and fell. Visiting these sites is an emotional journey, a way to walk in the footsteps of their forebears, to honor their sacrifice, and to truly understand the hardships they endured. We will pick you up from either your Cassino Hotel or Cassino train station at 9:45 am.
