CASSINO MEDAL OF HONOR TOUR
This tour is a tribute to three heroes who were awarded the highest military medal for actions above and beyond the call of duty during the battle of Monte Cassino. Learn their stories and those of other American GIs who were involved in one of the bloodiest battles of World War II.
Sgt. Thomas E. McCall – San Angelo, 22 January 1944
36th Infantry Division, 143rd Regiment, Company F.
“For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at risk of life above and beyond the call of duty. Sgt. McCall led his machine gun section across the Rapido River under devastating fire. When his men were killed or wounded, he advanced alone, firing his weapon, silencing two enemy machine guns and killing several Germans before being severely wounded and taken prisoner.”
Pfc. Leo J. Powers – Cassino, 3 February 1944
34th Infantry Division, 133rd Regiment, Company F.
“Armed only with hand grenades, Pfc. Powers advanced alone under heavy fire. He destroyed three enemy pillboxes, killing several German soldiers and forcing the surrender of others. His actions broke the backbone of a heavily defended position.”
2nd Lt. Paul F. Riordan – Cassino, 1944
34th Infantry Division, 133rd Regiment, Company L.
“In the face of intense fire, Lt. Riordan moved forward alone, hurled a grenade, and silenced a German machine gun. Though killed in action, his bravery inspired his men and helped the attack succeed.”
You will learn personal stories of men who gave their lives in the fight for freedom, who inspired entire generations with their example. They are the forgotten heroes of Monte Cassino — but not for us. Our commitment to keeping their spirit alive is stronger than ever.
