Just 40 minutes from the Anzio battlefield, nestled between Borgo Faiti and Borgo San Michele near the city of Latina, lies one of the most extraordinary and often overlooked historical sites in Europe: Piana delle Orme.

Spread across more than 25,000 square meters, this remarkable private museum is organized as a vast historical park divided into multiple themed pavilions and exhibition areas. While its primary focus is on the Second World War and the Italian Campaign, the collection also explores other fascinating aspects of Italian history and rural life.

What You Will See

WWII Dioramas and Exhibits

Large-scale immersive dioramas illustrate key moments of the war, including Italy’s entry into World War II, the North African Campaign, the Allied landings at Anzio, and the Battle of Monte Cassino.

Visitors walk through carefully reconstructed environments that recreate wartime scenes using original uniforms, weapons, and personal artifacts. These displays help bring the dramatic events of the Italian Campaign vividly to life.

Vehicles and Tanks

The museum houses an impressive collection of military vehicles from World War II, including Allied tanks, jeeps, artillery pieces, and other equipment recovered from across the Italian countryside.

One of the most remarkable exhibits is the Duplex Drive Sherman Tank, an amphibious tank designed for Allied beach landings.

This particular DD Sherman was recovered from the seabed off Salerno in 1998. Its preserved structure and propeller system demonstrate how the tank once floated toward the beach before shedding its flotation gear and advancing inland during amphibious operations.

Only a handful of these tanks survive today, making this exhibit one of the most fascinating objects in the museum.

Farming and Pontine History

Piana delle Orme also explores the history of the surrounding region. The museum includes an extensive collection of over 300 vintage tractors and agricultural machines, illustrating the transformation of the Pontine Plain during the twentieth century.

A dedicated section examines the drainage of the Pontine Marshes during the 1930s, a major engineering project carried out under Mussolini’s regime. Through reconstructed scenes of rural life and historical documentation, visitors gain insight into the social and political context in which the war unfolded.

Another section of the museum presents a large collection of WWII-themed toys, model soldiers, and scale reconstructions.

After visiting the museum, the tour can continue along the axis of the U.S. Fifth Army’s advance toward Rome.

From selected high-ground positions overlooking the Pontine Plain and the Alban Hills, we can read the landscape like a map — tracing the routes, rivers, ridgelines, and strategic positions that shaped the campaign during the final push toward the Italian capital.

This combination of museum interpretation and battlefield exploration allows visitors to understand how strategy, geography, and human experience intersected during the war.
