The Custer Division’s Campaign in Italy

     
  • Santa Maria Infante (May 11–12, 1944): Fierce fighting by the 337th Regiment to capture German observation posts and fortified hills like S Ridge, Hill 120, and Hill 131.

  • Minturno (May 12–13): A key crossing point near the Garigliano River where coordinated assaults broke German lines.

  • Formia & Gaeta (May 13–16): Urban combat and street fighting required close cooperation between the 338th and 339th Regiments to dislodge entrenched German forces.
