Anzio Battlefield Tour

Introduction to the Anzio Campaign

The Anzio Campaign, launched on January 22, 1944, was a bold amphibious operation intended to outflank German defenses along the Gustav Line and open the road to Rome. While initially successful in achieving strategic surprise, the Allied forces soon found themselves pinned down by fierce German resistance. The campaign devolved into a bloody stalemate lasting months, marked by trench warfare, counterattacks, and attritional fighting. It wasn't until late May 1944 that the Allies finally broke out of the beachhead, paving the way for the liberation of Rome. British and Commonwealth troops played a critical role in holding the line and mounting offensives under incredibly harsh conditions, showcasing immense courage and endurance.
