Western Sector of the Gustav Line: British Assault at Minturno, Castelforte & Monte Ornito

British Assault at Minturno, Castelforte & Monte Ornito

Outflanking the Western Sector of the Gustav Line – January 1944

In January 1944, during the First Battle of Cassino, British forces launched a major offensive along the western edge of the Gustav Line. This lesser-known but crucial front stretched across rugged mountains and river valleys between Monte Ornito, Monte Damiano, and the Garigliano River. Towns such as Minturno, Castelforte, Santi Cosma e Damiano, and Tufo became key landmarks in the British push to outflank the German defenses.

While American units attacked across the Rapido River, British X Corps faced the dangerous task of crossing the Garigliano under fire and advancing through heavily fortified terrain. Their goal was to destabilize the western end of the Gustav Line and create a path toward the Liri Valley from the south. In support of this larger effort, British Commandos were deployed in stealth landings to disrupt enemy positions and support the river crossings.

Their actions, often conducted under cover of darkness and in complete radio silence, laid the groundwork for the broader infantry assault that followed.

BRITISH COMMANDOS IN THE GARIGLIANO OPERATION

On the night of 17–18 January 1944, British Commandos—including No. 9 Commando and 43 Royal Marine Commando—launched coordinated landings near the mouth of the Garigliano River. Operating in darkness and under difficult terrain conditions, their mission was to create a diversion and eliminate German outposts between Minturno and Tufo. These actions helped mislead German command about the main axis of attack, reducing pressure on the infantry crossings farther inland.

After landing, the Commandos advanced inland through swamps and ridges, engaging in close combat to neutralize fortified German positions. Their objectives included securing high ground, disrupting communications, and preventing reinforcements from reaching the front. According to official war diaries, the Commandos faced "intense mortar and MG fire from well-camouflaged emplacements." Despite these obstacles, they achieved their objectives and inflicted considerable disruption on the German 94. Infanterie-Division.

A veteran of No. 9 Commando later recalled: “We came ashore under moonlight, with just the sound of our boots in the water and the crackle of the wireless. We knew it wouldn’t be long before they spotted us.”
