Who Were the Men of the Polish II Corps?
The Polish II Corps was formed from soldiers deported to Soviet labor camps after the 1939 invasion of Poland. Released in 1941 after a political agreement, they regrouped under British command and were led by General Władysław Anders. Trained in the Middle East, they joined the British Eighth Army in Italy. Composed of civilians turned soldiers, they had survived hardship and exile. Their determination and courage became legendary on the slopes of Monte Cassino.
General Władysław Anders – A Leader of Dignity and Defiance
General Anders, born in 1892, led the Polish II Corps with empathy and determination. A former POW of the Soviets, he guided his troops through exile, battle, and eventual victory. His leadership and legacy are commemorated at Monte Cassino, where he is buried among his soldiers.
