100th Battalion: GO FOR BROKE TOUR
100th Battalion: GO FOR BROKE TOUR
Honoring the Legacy of the Nisei Soldiers
During World War II, the 100th Infantry Battalion, composed predominantly of second-generation Japanese Americans (Nisei), distinguished itself as one of the most courageous and resilient units in the U.S. Army. Despite facing discrimination and skepticism at home, these soldiers fought with extraordinary bravery, earning the battalion the nickname "Go for Broke"—a Hawaiian phrase meaning to risk everything for victory.
The 100th Battalion became the most decorated unit in U.S. Army history for its size and length of service, earning thousands of awards, including 21 Medals of Honor, over 4,000 Purple Hearts, and seven Presidential Unit Citations. Their heroic actions in Italy and France not only helped shape the outcome of the war but also paved the way for greater recognition of Japanese Americans in the United States.
The 100th Battalion in the Italian Campaign
The battalion landed at Salerno in September 1943 as part of the U.S. 5th Army. From there, they fought their way north through some of the toughest battles of the Italian campaign:
- Battle of the Volturno River (October 1943): The 100th Battalion played a critical role in securing river crossings under intense enemy fire, proving their determination and skill.
- Monte Cassino (January-February 1944): Tasked with breaking through German defenses, the Nisei soldiers fought through relentless artillery and machine-gun fire in the rugged terrain surrounding the monastery. The battle tested their endurance to the limit, with many men making the ultimate sacrifice.
- Anzio and Beyond (Spring 1944): After Cassino, the 100th Battalion continued fighting in Italy before joining the 442nd Regimental Combat Team in France, where they would go on to make history in battles such as the Rescue of the Lost Battalion.
This tour offers a unique opportunity to walk in the footsteps of these legendary soldiers and pay tribute to their legacy.
