The 3rd Infantry Division was composed by the 7th, 15th, and 30th regiment. They landed in Paestum in the morning of 18th September 1943, after the bloody battle of Salerno was over. They advanced through the Appenines and they captured the key location of Acerno on 22nd September 1943. They crossed the Volturno river by the Triflisco gap and in November 1943 they were involved in the Battle of the Winter line by Mignano Gap in the attempt to open the way to Rome to liberate Italy from the Nazis-fascist regime.They were involved in the battle of Mount Rotondo and Cannavinelle from 6th to 8th November 1943.
During our tour we will visit the battlefields and the memorials of the US 3rd Division, located south of Cassino, in the winter line where the division fought in November 1943. The Mignano gap operations proved to be one of the most heartbreaking, nerve-wrecking episodes in the history of the Third Division.
